Climax of Tokyo's "Sanja Matsuri" festival
People in Tokyo have enjoyed the climax of the annual 3-day early summer festival featuring 3 portable shrines. The event was held for the first time in 2 years.
The "Sanja Matsuri" is one of the capital's largest festivals with a 700-year history and is held in the Asakusa district of downtown Tokyo.
Last year, following the earthquake and tsunami on March 11th, the organizers decided to cancel most parts of the festival, including the parade.
On Sunday, men and women wearing "happi" coats carried 3 golden portable shrines on their shoulders to take different routes for the 3 shrines that each weigh about one ton.
Thousands of onlookers cheered the participants and took photos of the parade.
A woman who carried one of the shrines said the town looked deserted last year. She said she feels even happier than before to take part in the festival after one year's absence.
The organizer's representative, Nobuhisa Yoshioka, said the Tokyo Sky Tree will open soon and Tokyo will have a new tourist attraction along with traditional events like this festival. He said he hopes the festival will encourage people to find ways to boost the economy.

Crane dismantling on Tokyo Sky Tree begins
Work began on Monday to dismantle the giant cranes used for the construction of the Tokyo Sky Tree broadcasting tower.
The top of the tower reached 634 meters above the ground in March. It is the tallest broadcasting tower in the world.
On Monday, work to take down 4 giant cranes from the roof of a 375-meter-high observation deck began. The cranes had been used to lift materials for building higher parts of the tower.
Steel frames that held the props of the cranes to the tower structure were removed on Monday morning. The props will be dismantled next, before the cranes themselves are disassembled one by one.
A chief engineer of the tower's builder, Obayashi Corporation, said the dismantling of the cranes means that construction work is almost done. He said he feels both joy and a sense of loss.
The cranes will be removed by the middle of July.
The tower is scheduled to begin operating in the spring of next year.

Interior of Tokyo Sky Tree shown to media
The interior of Tokyo's new broadcasting tower, the Tokyo Sky Tree, was opened to the media on Sunday.
The tower now under construction in Sumida Ward will replace the existing Tokyo Tower in 2012.
The tower, designed to be the world's tallest at 634 meters, currently stands at 215 meters.
Reporters were shown the tower's main pillar, which is 230 centimeters in diameter, and the outer section that will house elevators to the observatories.
In the summer of next year, the first observatory will be completed at 350 meters and the second one at the
450 meter level will be finished in the winter.
A construction manager said the project is going well and one third of the tower has been completed. He said the higher the tower gets, the more difficult the task becomes. He said his staff take pride in making sure they can work safely.
